MapRun - Overview of Ways to Set up an Event
MapRun has normally been focused on organised club events. That is, scheduled club events requiring the display of results. These events are normally set up by an organiser and published to the MapRun server as an event which appears in the folders of events available, and in "Events Near Me".
To enable this, MapRun Administrators are appointed who have access to a system that allows them to:
- publish, edit and remove events,
- process results, and
- do other event-related tasks.
For individuals or clubs wanting to explore GPS-based Orienteering, MapRun6 offers some ways to get started quickly. These are described here with links to a page of details on each. The following list gives a summary of the key aspects of each option.
QuickStart:
- Summary: Set a simple course on your phone by dropping pins on the satellite image
- Shareable on multiple devices: NO
- Orienteering Map: NO
- Determines and Publishes Results: NO
- Files Required: NONE
- Who: Anyone with MapRun6 can set their own event with QuickStart.
- Notes: Courses cannot currently be edited or exported.
CheckSites:
- Summary: Publish a course and a map (either or both) to the server, such that the "Event" can be used on multiple devices, secured with a confidential 6-digit access code.
- Shareable on multiple devices: YES
- Orienteering Map: OPTIONAL (needs to be in KMZ format)
- Determines and Publishes Results: NO
- Files Required: Map in KMZ format (optional); A set of controls in a KML file, typically created using Google Earth, but there is a wide variety of tools (optional).
- Who: Anyone with MapRun6 can set their own event with CheckSites and make the access code available to others.
- Notes: This is targeted at organisers wanting to check an event, or control locations with a small group of helpers. Rather than publishing the files to the server, there is also the option to import the files from the SDcard in your Android.
Published Event:
- Summary: Events for competition, publicly available (can be locked with a PIN), can be selected within MapRun6 in the event folders or "Events near Me", and have a results system set up to display a results table and runners tracks.
- Shareable on multiple devices: YES
- Orienteering Map: REQUIRED (needs to be in KMZ format)
- Determines and Publishes Results: YES
- Files Required: Map in KMZ format; A set of controls in a KML file, typically created using Google Earth, but there is a wide variety of tools (optional).
- Who: Someone with MapRun Administrator access needs to publish the event. The settings are typically locked so that competitors can't change key parameters (eg whether their location is displayed, the time allowed for the event etc).
