Location Services - Main and Supplementary
MapRun 6 includes a second tracking system as a supplement to the primary tracking software module. By default, both systems are switched on, but this can be changed in Options and Settings.
This is intended to improve performance on some phones where it has been difficult to get an initial fix (ie the red bar at the bottom of the screen fails to move to yellow/green). The supplementary service, is simpler, but it does not track locations once the phone screen has been blanked (unless there is another background location service running that keeps location updates coming through).
It is expected that getting a GPX fix with MapRun v6 will perform better than earlier versions as:
- it uses the latest version of the main/primary tracking system software module
- has a supplementary service as well in case of issues with the main service.
While Running
During a run, when a new location is returned from either system:
If the track is being displayed (not normally the case):
- the primary track is shown in the selected colour (default is red)
- the supplementary track is shown in light blue double width behind the primary track
- the combined track will typically show as a blue track with a red stripe in the middle.
- locations are blended into one stream
- if a new location is the same as previous it is discarded (to remove duplicated data)
- typically the supplementary system is simpler and faster, and so it’s datapoint is used by MapRun and saved in the database. (and the subsequent repeat location from the primary service is the one that is discarded).
Track Shown in Results – MapRun App
The track shown in the results display within MapRun will show both the red and blue tracks. However, by this point, the duplicate data points have been removed, and most points will have come from the supplementary service and so will be shown in blue. You will only see red, where they has been a difference between the two systems.
In summary, in normal circumstances, the track will be predominately blue, unless the run was with the supplementary service switched off, in which case, the track will be red (or whatever the selected colour is).
Track Shown in Results – RouteGadget on the Server
Any track exported as a GPX file (as is done for the combined results) loses knowledge of the source of each location point and will be displayed in the usual way.
